The story of my family's immigration to Canada has been recounted from a masculine perspective throughout every rendition. This occurs more often than not in the retelling of history, as we witness the role of women being portrayed as less significant to the discourse.
In an exploration of my matrilineage, Le Radici Del Mio Albero raises a conversation about the resilience of femininity and culture throughout the ever changing lens of immigration. Learning and documenting my grandmother's life story has given me deeper insight into myself, my upbringing, and my cultural roots, while also giving her the chance to share a story from a perspective that is rarely heard.
Through this video piece, I accentuate her voice, her gaze, and the tokens and mementos in her space that are significant to her story. As she revisits her archives while reminiscing on her childhood, I felt it important to allow her to express her experience as I engage with my history and understanding of place and womanhood. Stories like this are often left untold and undocumented. With Le Radici Del Mio Albero, I undo this tradition and embrace my grandmother's perspective, a woman I admire and am inspired by, to redirect the patriarchal narrative of immigration and family.
