Where I've Always Been is, at surface level, a project about liminal spaces found throughout Montreal's rundown commercial centers. With an emphasis on environment, I wanted to capture corners of these malls that are often overlooked as mundane and sought to frame them in a way that made them familiar and eerie. Spaces have always been the primary way that I orient myself, I often leave remembering the paint on a wall or a chip on a tile before the faces of the people I met. For this reason, the people in these malls were purposely omitted from the photos. I wanted to marry this idea of space, to the time I spent following my mom around stores as a child, looking to find nostalgia in a feeling and recreate it. Where I've Always Been is a diary from my former self, in an attempt to make remembering universal. I offer the documentation of these spaces to you and hope you can find yourself in them in the same way I did, because it simply is where I've always been.
